Raised in a large Irish Catholic family, Short developed a keen interest in performing arts from a young age. After graduating from McMaster University, Martin Short initially considered a career in social work but moved to Toronto to explore acting. His first paid acting role was in a Chargex commercial in March 1972, followed by a part in the 1972 production of the Broadway hit “Godspell.” During this time, Short dated Gilda Radner, a fellow cast member. He continued to build his career with roles in Canadian television shows, theatrical productions, and even a writing position on the variety show “Everything Goes” in 1974.
